Christmas Spiced Scones Recipe - A Book Inspired Recipe
We are baking up some yummy Christmas Spice Scones today with the kids while reading Tea for Ruby by Sarah Furgason The Duchess of York and Robin Preiss Glasser! Let me share this recipe with you...
We love to bake, and I really like recipes that are simple to make with kids because my 4-year-old really enjoys helping in the kitchen, and he was very happy to help with this recipe! While we have been learning about England, while I am creating the Build Your Masterpiece Class, we wanted to try out scones! These scones are a nice treat with your tea time. If you want a more plain and simple scone, you can simply omit the spices.
Christmas Spiced Scones Recipe ~ Perfect for tea time!
Ingredients Needed:
- 2 Cups of All Purpose Flour
- 1/4 cup of white sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp of salt (omit if using salted butter)
- 1/2 cup of cold butter
- 1/2 tsp of Ginger
- 1/2 tsp of Cinnamon
- Dash of Nutmeg
- 1 tsp of Vanilla Extract
Method to make your own Christmas Spice Scones with your kids:
In one medium-sized bowl, add in all of your dry ingredients, the flour, sugar, baking powder, soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Using a whisk, mix all together until combined. Next, take your butter, and cut it into your dry ingredients. Use your fingers, to pinch and mix the butter and flour until it becomes a crumbly mixture.Once you have smooth crumb-like consistency, you can add in your egg.Add in the milk, and mix until it becomes a sticky dough. Do this gently with your hands, or a fork.If you would like to add your vanilla, you can do that now as well.Once fully combined, and mixed (very gently, hardly knead the dough) you can turn it out onto your lightly floured surfaceLightly dust with flour, and bring together. Gently pat down with your hand, instead of a rolling pin. This dough is so delicate and comes together very simply. My 4-year-old son was eager to take over at this point, cutting out his own Christmas Spiced Scones, and he loved it! Using about a 2-inch wide cookie cutter, apply pressure straight down, and lift straight up and place onto a lined baking sheet, seeing as not to twist your cutter in the dough. Up and down, that is the motion you want to achieve. Twisting will cause the scones to have a difficult time to rise while baking.Continue to cut your scones out, and when you have used up all your dough from the first cutting, blend the bits together, pat down flat once again, and continue to cut out all your scones. This was my sons favorite part of this hands-on activity, and he was humming Christmas songs the whole time. This is a really fun recipe to make with your kids, and tested with my youngest! Once all the fun is mostly done, cover your scones with a towel, and allow to rest 10-30 minutes in a warm place. My son continued to play with the rest of the bits of the dough, singing the whole time. After your scones have rested, beat up one egg, with a bit of milk, and using a brush, apply your egg wash to the tops only of each of your scones. Then, sprinkle on some white sugar, and a dash of cinnamon to the tops. By only applying the egg wash and sugar to the tops, it allows for the scones dough to rise better. Now they are ready to bake! Once your oven is at 350F, pop these lovelies in, and set your kitchen timer for 8 minutes, at which point, you will need to turn the baking sheet around and put the timer on for another 8 minutes. When they are done, they will be lightly golden brown on the edges and tops. Let them cool on the baking sheet until they are cool enough to transfer to a cooling rack. They were lightly crispy on the outside, and soft and slightly crumbly on the inside. You can serve them with butter, icing, or clotted cream, and enjoy them with a cup of tea.A wonderful book to go along with making your own scones is Tea for Ruby by Sarah Furgason The Duchess of York and Robin Preiss Glasser is a delightful story about a little girl who lives in England, and who receives an invitation to have tea with the Queen, and she being to prep for it diligently, with a lovely twist at the end. I hope you enjoy making these Christmas Spiced Scones and reading Tea for Ruby by Sarah Ferguson the Duchess of York and Robin Preiss Glasser, with your kids, this holiday season!Til next time,Breath deeply and enjoy building your masterpiece with scissors and glue and scones too!~Alexandra
