If you have been reading our blog lately you know that I love to pair recipes with books, to bring the kids into the kitchen and deeper find connections to the story, just like with our Build Your Masterpiece Class Unit Studies. Easy Cheese Biscuits Recipe

Ingredients Needed:

1 3/4 cup of flour
4 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp of sugar
1 tsp of garlic and herbs seasoning
Salt and pepper to taste
1/4 cup of butter, cubed or grated
1 cup of grated cheddar cheese
1 cup of milk

How to Make these Easy Cheese Biscuits with your kids:

Preheat your oven to 425 F (220C) and then place all of your dry ingredients into a medium bowl, and whisk to combine. Grate your cheese, and cube or grate your butter.Once that's all mixed, add your butter and use your hands to combine until you get a crumbly mixture.Then add in your grated cheese, and toss to mix.Your mixture will look something like this, and once you get to this point, all you need to do is grab a fork and slowly pour in your 1 cup of milk, and mix up!You will end up with a ragged and moist dough, that comes together fairly quickly.Next, line a baking sheet with parchment paper, grab a spoon and drop mounds of dough onto your sheet.

Time to Bake your Easy Cheese Biscuits

Once you have a sheet full of biscuits, you are set to bake them in a preheated oven at 425 F for 13 - 15 minutes, or until lightly browned.

After 13 minutes, your Easy Cheese Biscuits are done!

They will have puffed up nicely and hardened just enough on the outside, but soft and bouncy on the inside. You can see the bits of cheese poking out here and there. They really are beautiful.

Walter the Baker by Eric Carle is a nice story for kids, about a baker in a town surrounded by a wall which we learned, was called a Duchy because it is ruled by a duke and duchess. This lead to a bit of research for the kids, to learn more about what is a Duke and Duchess, and English Royalty.

Walter the Baker does what his name suggests, he bakes!

In fact, all of his delicious cookies, pies, tarts, and breads are so good, people come from all around to buy his creations. He also bakes for the Duke and Duchess and they preferred his rolls with jam and honey.

Like most mornings, Walter begins making his sweet rolls.

But his cat tips over the can of milk, and he has to improvise his sweet rolls recipe, with water instead of milk. He used what he had and hoped no one would mind. And most people probably wouldn't, but the duke and duchess had very particular tastes...While baking our Easy Cheese Biscuits, we were able to talk about how we used milk to make them, and if we had not used the milk they may not taste as good.

What do they think?

Well, of course, they could tell the rolls were not right and were very upset! So upset that they tell him he must make an impossible invention or leave their land for good (because they couldn't be known for having awful sweet rolls!)So, Walter needed to make a new roll made with only one piece of dough, yet it had to show the sun three times and taste good. How would he be able to do that? He didn't know, but he worked all that night trying to come up with something!He just about gave up, when in a final burst of rage he threw the dough in the air, and it fell down in a pail of water. But his son and wife saw something interesting, and quickly threw the accidentally made creation into the oven!Luckily, he had made it on time, and he had a creation they could see the sunshine through, three times! And of course, everything worked out, the Duchess and Duke loved it and he named it the Pretzel!We loved this story and now I want to make pretzels next!
