We wanted to try the homemade pizza recipe in the Build Your Masterpiece Class this weekend, and read our first book on the list! Living in Italy...It was a fun time and the kids really liked it.
Making Homemade Pizza while learning about Italy ??
I measured the dough and proved the yeast. We used a package of pizza yeast and it worked really well. A pinch of sugar in my warm water, about 325-400 ml, and the yeast proved quickly.I mixed and kneaded the dough, which I divided it into 4 balls and set them on a sheet dusted with breadcrumbs.We had herbed breadcrumbs but you can also use regular bread crumbs or semolina flour. Looking back, I wish I had oiled the sheet too.Cover with a damp cloth and let rise for 2 hours in a warm place.
After the two hours is up:
It was as hard to wait as we were so hungry, but once it the 2 hours of rising time was done, we took one ball of dough at a time, on a lightly floured surface and lightly floured the ball, and rolled it out with our weighted marble rolling pin. Our dough worked best to be rolled, so we used the pin.We transferred the pizza dough to the pan that we will bake it on, and then add our toppings. It is much easier that way! You can lightly oil them as well, and toss some bread crumbs on top.
Pans you can choose to bake your pizza on:
A baking sheet, a large pizza pan, a medium pizza pan with holes, or even a pie pan!Our first pan to use was one of our favorite, the medium-sized pan with holes in it. It cooks fast on this one. About 7- 10 min depending on how loaded it is.The first one turned out great and didn't last long, I hardly was able to capture it on camera.
Our next pizza went like this:
We rolled it out nicely. We topped it with pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni slices, sliced mushrooms and fresh basil. Then we baked it in the oven (425) for about 10 minutes. It came out looking and smelling like some sort of heaven, and we were excited to give this one a try next.We continued to bake all four balls of pizza dough, it was a lengthy process, but so worth it.ย We got out the first book on the list, and read all about living in Italy ??. The kids loved it and so did we!
Dessert Pizza with Cinnamon + Sugar
Our son (7) wanted only a dessert pizza and so we put his favourite toppings on it. Melted butter and cinnamon and sugar. It was fun and he loved it! This was seriously the first pizza this child has EVER eaten!!He loved rolling the dough and dusting the cinnamon and sugar on top. He couldn't wait to try it out because he knew it loved this topping on toast, so he hoped that maybe he could like pizza along with the rest of us.When it came out of the oven, it smelled so good, the whole house could smell something was different with this pizza.He could not wait much longer and wanted to taste it to see if he would in fact like it. If any of you have picky eaters at home, you maybe understand how happy I was that this was happening, even if it was cinnamon and sugar!He loved it, and we all had a taste and loved it too.All in all our homemade pizza ? night was a hit and we enjoyed reading to the kids and leading something new about Italy.Follow us on Instagram as we continue the Build Your Masterpiece Class!
