Making a No-Sew Sock Snowman - A Book Inspired Activity

Making a No-Sew Sock Snowman is so much fun to make with your kids while reading the book The Biggest, Best Snowman by Margery Cuyler and Will Hillenbrand this holiday season, you will be so happy you did, let me show you how to make these adorable little snowmen that will warm your heart!

This activity has been inspired by the book The Biggest, Best Snowman by Margery Cuyler and Will Hillenbrand. It has been in our winter collection for years and we read it once or twice every winter, and my kids really enjoy seeing how all the animals help this little girl, who is feeling overlooked by her family because of her size and age. My children love books with animals who help children, and this snowman building book really hits home for us, and shares a message to the youngest in the family, that they matter, and they can contribute regardless of how small they may appear. Let's build our own snuggly snowman that we can cherish for a long time...

No-Sew Sock Snowman Craft

Supplies Needed:

  • 2 socks per snowman
  • pom poms
  • googly eyes
  • star beads
  • Gems
  • Colorful Buttons
  • Feather
  • Yarn or String
  • Long colorful beads
  • Ribbon
  • Rice and Polly Fill
  • Hot Glue + Glue Gun

Method for making your own No-Sew Sock Snowman with your kids:

Start by filling your sock with rice, to create a heavy sitting base. You can tie a ribbon around the rice at this stage, or do it later, it is up to you. Then add your polyfill to the top, and using your string, or elastic bands, a knot at the top of your sock to secure all your filling. Trim off the excess sock.  Cut your second sock in the middle, and use the bottom part of the sock to use as a hat for your snowman. Next, cut bits of yarn or string for the hair and glue onto the head of your snowman.  Then you can glue your hat on top. Continue to glue on your eyes, nose, and mouth.  Don't forget to add a little festive pompom to the top of your snowman's hat!  If you have not done so already, tie a ribbon of your choice around the midsection of your no-sew sock snowman, to separate the rice from the fluff, and give your little girl or boy some fun decor!  You can glue on more details such as beads and buttons on the belly, ribbon or gems on your hat, or more pompoms if you would like! This project really allows for a lot of creativity with your kids, and we found that if you simply give them the supplies, they will come up with their own unique ideas for how their snowman should look!  Have fun with this, and the more kids you have, the more sibling snowmen you will have too!  These are a wonderful craft to make, along with reading The Biggest, Best Snowman with your kids this winter season, let me know if you make some below!

Til next time,Breathe deeply and enjoy building your Masterpiece with scissors and glue and snowmen too,~Alexandra
