Glitter Snow Dough Recipe - A Book Inspired Activity + Book Review
We have been mixing up the most fun sensory bin activity while reading Winter Snow Fun by Wendy Dunham and Michel Sparks, and my 4-year-old has been loving it!
Have you heard of the Tales of Buttercup Grove?
It's a beautifully written and illustrated book series centered around kindness, good Christian values, and being a good friend. They are sure to bring smiles and joy into your home as you read them with your kids! They have for us.As the seasons have changed from autumn to winter my 4-year-old who loved Autumn is for Apple Pie, and all the fun projects we did around that book, has been so excited to see Skunk and Raccoon in this new and fun storybook from Wendy Dunham and Michal Sparks. Every night he asks for this story, which I love to read.Let me share how you can easily make this awesome indoor-play-snow using our Glitter Snow Dough Recipe with your kids, along with our book review of this beautiful storybook, perfect for snow-themed sensory learning at home, or in the classroom!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJPL9_wofgU&feature=youtu.beThis sensory bin activity is great for measuring and fine motor skills, plus play! Read Winter Snow Fun before, during or afterward, and you have yourself the perfect preschool activity, that kids ages 2-9 will enjoy!
Glitter Snow Dough Recipe:
- 3-2/3 cups of baking soda
- 3/4 to 1 cup conditioner or hand lotion, or a mix of both
- 2/4 cups of iridescent glitter
Method for making Glitter Snow Dough with your kids:
- Measure out your flour and add in your glitter.
- Add in your conditioner or hand lotion, and mix mix mix!
- Have fun getting your fingers strong by kneading and mixing your own snow dough at home. Unlike real snow, this will not melt or make little hands freeze! There is a bit of a mess if not too careful, so keep eyes on toddlers at all times (but baking soda on the floor, is better than a puddle of melted snow)
- Have fun building snowballs, snowmen and more. To help your Glitter Snow Dough last longer, keep it in an air-tight container. If it begins to harden or dry out, from perhaps being left out all day, simply add a bit more conditioner or hand lotion to the mix, and it will freshen it up!
- Tip* If you want your snow to really hold it's shape, such as snowballs, hills or forts, simply add more conditioner, one pump at a time until you get your desired hold. Let the kids experiment with it as well. My son had so much fun with this project, he couldn't really believe I was letting him get away with it!

Winter Snow Fun by Wendy Dunham and Michal Sparks
What I love most about these books is their deeply touching messages, simply combined with common everyday experiences you and your child can relate to, and opens the door for thoughts on how to treat others, how to look on the bright side and learn how to deal with obstacles that might come your way.
Winter Snow Fun begins with the friends Skunk and Raccoon, all dressed up for winter, simply waiting. It's hard waiting for the snow to come, and skunk is feeling it big time. Lucky for him, his good friend Racoon has great advice and helps him focus on being patient. Once the snow finally comes, all the friends gather together and have fun outside in the snow. They build a hill out of the snow in Raccoons yard and sled down over and over.
Just like most first snowfall days, the sun comes out and begins to melt the snow, they all so desperately waited for. But building a snowman is next on their list and is a wonderful, and fun moment for the reader, who can easily relate to this.
My son predicted that they would build a snowman, as he knew that's what you can do once the snow melts a bit. He did hope they put a carrot as a nose and began to explain how they could have found one at rabbits' house.
He also loved seeing them all go back to Raccoons house for hot chocolate and marshmallows, and couldn't stop laughing when they had a "snowball fight" with marshmallows inside. His favorite part of the book was when mole and mouse hid under the table so as not be hit by the flying marshmallows! Adorable.
Overall, as usual, Wendy and Michal have created a lovely book that is quickly becoming cherished and read again and again. Perfect for our winter themed book library! Teaching our kids those important character building lessons in the simplest of ways, by snuggling together and reading the adventures of Skunk and Raccoon have been a great way to start the winter season!
