Making yarn dolls is a tradition that has been around for hundreds of years, and in the Build Your Masterpiece Class, we will be making them while learning about France.

The Adventures in France is on its way, but in the meantime, we have made a variation of them, for our love of Rapunzel!Rapunzel Yarn DollWith the newest Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure TV Series now out, my daughters love for Rapunzel has been ignited. We love this fairytale in all its variations and I cannot wait to share with you this fun version of a yarn doll, perfect for your girls! Plus, it's a great way to use your recycled materials.

What you need:

  • Yarn: 2-3 colors. I used white for the hair, purple for the body and teal blue for the arms. Feel free to use any color you have or like. I'd love to see this made with yellow hair, we just didn't have any on hand.
  • 8x11 cardboard for the body
  • 4x6 cardboard for the arms
  • 17-inch cardboard for the hair
  • ruler, or cutting mat
  • Scissors

What to do:

Measure out the cardboard pieces and cut them down to size for wrapping your yarn.Make a note that while wrapping, your yarn stretches and tends to shrink a little bit in the end. When you have as much yarn as you want, wrapped around your cardboard, tie off at the top and cut the bottom.I wrapped 100 times for the body, 50 times for the arms and 80-100 times for the hair.Rapunzel Yarn DollOnce you have your hair, body, and arms, you will begin to connect them all together.Rapunzel Yarn DollPlace your hair on top of the body, or the purple yarn and using the same yarn that you used to tie the hair together, tie again to the purple yarn. Keep this fairly long as you will use this string to attach the arms as well.Rapunzel Yarn DollOnce your hair is attached, pull the purple yarn together to make the head.Rapunzel Yarn DollYou will then tie a matching string of yarn around the head, making the neck.Next thing is to attach the arms. Open up our dolls body in the middle.Rapunzel Yarn DollFind the same string that tied your hair together, and use this to secure your arms. You can braid the arms from the tied spot and tie at the end. (I did trim up the arms a bit at the end)Rapunzel Yarn DollPlace your purple yarn back over the top of the arms, and gather it tightly, then secure it with a matching color of yarn, creating the waist.Rapunzel Yarn DollYou can add a fun braided belt to the waist, which adds a bit more flair, personality and something extra to play with. Your kids can take it on and off, practicing their bow tying skills.

Braid a Belt

Cut 6 strips of yarn, any color you desire, I used pink and a multi-colored yarn and tape them down.Braid them into a long belt, and tie off at the top and bottom.Rapunzel Yarn DollAttach your braided belt to the body of your Rapunzel Yarn Doll and tie in a pretty bow.Rapunzel Yarn DollAt this point, you can be done, or you can play around with the hair a bit as I did.Rapunzel Yarn Doll

Braid the Hair

Tie your yarn together low at the neck, and make a braid down, then tie again with a corresponding color.Rapunzel Yarn DollIn the end, I used a longer purple string of yarn at the neck and tied the hair together. Then I made a second tie around the neck with the same string and made a bow. This secured the hair more to the head, because there is so much yarn for hair, and it gets heavy. You can add more accessories and embellishments if you desire. I am thinking of gluing on two white pearl bead eyes, but for now, it's good enough for me!Rapunzel Yarn DollYou can also make a few trims on the ends if you need too.Rapunzel Yarn DollI only needed to trim a little bit off.Rapunzel Yarn Doll

This Rapunzal Yarn Doll is so sweet and fun, and brings smiles to all kids faces! A perfect snuggle toy for the next movie night with the Tangled series!
