Top 20 Art Supplies We Use While Homeschooling
I absolutely love art time with my kids at home, and you literally have to pull me away from doing crafts with them - I’d rather do those things than the mountain of laundry, and I wanted to share with you more about what art supplies we love to have on hand in our homeschool, and how we use them with our Masterpiece Curriculum and Adventures in Europe Unit Studies.
This post contains affiliate links. I only recommend products that I love and use. Thank you for your support.
Pencils
Ok, this can seem like a very basic supply, and in truth it is. But we need a lot of them because my boys love to ‘play’ with pencils and make them characters in games. So we like to have a good amount of them around. These are my favorites.
Pencils, Pencil + Eraser Set Erasers: White Oval Eraser - Kneaded Rubber Eraser
Markers
Day in, day out, our kids love coloring with Markers, and Crayola is the one we trust. We use them all the time with our coloring pages in our Adventures in Europe, Learning Packs and more.
Here are the ones we love, and cannot live without:
Super Tips, Broad Line, Dual-Tip Brush/Fine, but we love these Crayola Thick + Thin
All Kinds of Paints
Painting with kids comes really naturally for me, because I love art and adding paint to anything is just more fun! These are the paints we keep on hand at all times.
We always have some Acrylic Paint, and Crayola Washable Paint on had, for any typical art project or painting that may come up along the way.
Watercolor Paints
We absolutely LOVE this watercolor kit, that is perfect for travel, painting outdoors, on the go, or at the kitchen table.
Sukura Koi Travel Set of 48 Water Colors, along with these pre-cut 5 x 7 watercolor paper, which make homeschool field trips a breeze to include watercolor painting!
I always use them in our homeschool, for small projects I do and set up for the kids, like this one below.
Or when my 9 year old daughter is inspired to paint while we read our Art + Baking Study Guide of the Trumpet of the Swan, which is available now for Pre-Order, as we continue to combine this study! Check out more about his pre-order product here, and the book giveaway and freebies we are offering to everyone who pre-orders before we release!
For a more basic watercolour set like the one featured below with our B is for Brush Letter page and inspired children’s book, try one like like these, these, or or these, which will do just nicely! for the job at home.
And if you are looking for a small journal with paper suited for watercolor, this one is great! I am really excited to start using mine, and when I do, I will defiantly share about it on our Instagram account. If you are looking for a tempera paint that’s toddler friendly, and in a cake-type pallet, these Alphacolor Concentrated Tempera Paint Biggie Cakes are great for at-home use, and I really want to get a set of them for my youngest who is 6.
Watercolor Pencils are a great way to add color, and we love these Crayola Colored Pencils, that act as regular and watercolor pencils in one! Color with the pencils, then add in some water with a brush to change the look, just like our 8 year old did with our A is for Artist letter coloring page above, from The Masterpiece Alphabet.
Oil Pastels
Another really great and easy art supply to have on hand, are oil pastels. Crayola wins again for me, with their varity of color opions and affordable prices. There are other brands with huge color choices, but to just start off with you kiddos, it’s Crayola all the way! check out these options: Oil pastels and Neon Oil Pastels.
Crayons
Of course most houses will have these, and our kids enjoy using them when they were very young, but we do love to use them for experiments with melting and re-making them into different sizes of crayons just for fun, like when we made them into fun shapes with the lesson C is for Crayon with the Masterpiece Alphabet below.
We like these Crayons.
The Extra Bits
There is a lot of other crafts and supplies that fall into the extra bits so I will simply list them here for you:
Glue (Liquid + Stick), Scissors, Ruler, Colored Chalk, Popsicle Sticks, Hot Glue Gun + Glue Sticks.
Paper:
Air Dry Clay
Air Dry Clay like when we made Magic Pasta Pinch Pots with Strega Nona and learning about Italy above. It was so fun to use clay to represent all the noodles coming out of the pasta pot! We include clay projects in most of our creative cirriculum for kids, so having a good supply on hand is one of the must haves in our house. Our kids love to work with clay while I read to them, like I was here, reading the Trumpet of the Swan:
You can find our Art + Baking Novel Study Guide for this in our shop - It’s a PRE-ORDER Special. As we continue to write, compile and test this novel study, we will be lauching it with a fun giveaway of the book, as well as giving our Masterpiece Numbers 1-30 Learning Pack away to everyone who PRE-ORDERS it before we release it! I am so excited about it. If all that sounds like something you might love, grab it now at a huge discount!
When we launch, it will be 15$, but get it in the pre-order, with freebies for only $10!
And while you enjoy your Pre-Order Novel Study, with a Chapter 1 Preview, you can also check out our Masterpiece Alphabet Arts + Crafts Curriculum, which also includes some really fun hands-on crafts including felt letters and embroidery using the letter pages as patters! We have included so many fun craft ideas for you to continue to build a masterpiece at home, with your kids.
The ART is the HEART of our curriculum. Try out our A is for ARTIST FREE to see if it’s a good for for you and your kids. We are also updating it, with additional Language Arts Worksheets so your kids from 3 to 13 can really shine!
Felt, Yarn, etc.
Here are some great products to get you started with felt with your kids.
Yarn, Felt, Embroidery Loop, Needle and Embroidery Thread.
Another wonderful source to learn more about embroidery is with a company called @knowlecraft who teaches new stitches on their Instagram account, and sells lovely kits and embroidery supplies in the UK and we just love to use them in our homeschool.
From the Kitchen + Recycling:
Tinfoil, plastic knife, plastic wrap, cardboard, milk jugs, toilet paper rolls, sponges, chop sticks, tin can, newspaper. These are just some of the things we recommend saving and having on hand to use for art projects at home.
We were so impressed with our one masterpiece building family was using their recycled materials to create their Earth Day Masterpieces, while combining our M is for Mosaic Lesson from the Masterpiece Alphabet and our Earth Day Learning Pack.
While using our Masterpiece Alphabet lessons, we enjoy Letter tracing in salt, sprinkles, sand or rice. I loved it when a family used colored rice to create a sensory bin to search and find our Watercolor Letter Coins, which can be found in our shop, as well as in our Masterpiece Alphabet.
I like having a small Sandwich Container with lid on hand for my son’s salt that he uses to trace his letters in, as it really helps to contain the mess when were aren’t using them.
And last but not least, string, push pins and clothes pins. These are things I love to keep on hand so that we can hang up the kids art projects, coloring pages, and more! I use the push pins in our walls (yes, I probably shouldn’t but oh well) and our bulletin boards. I tie a slip knot and secure it on the push pin, and then tie another slip knot at the other push pin. Above are our coloring pages from D is for Dots and L is for Line.
Thanks for reading today! This concludes my top 20 (or so) Art Supplies that we keep on hand at all times while learning at home.
Which were your favourite?
Til next time, have fun building your masterpiece,
~Alexandra
