How To Make 100 Rainbow Rocks for Your Classroom - Art Tutorial + Read-Aloud

Create 100 Rainbow Rocks for Your Classroom or homeschool with rocks from your backyard, acrylic paint and mod podge that your kids will love!We have been painting up a rainbow storm this weekend with rocks the kids gathered from the yard. They made it into a fun activity and worked together to gather the rocks for the project. I was hoping to create a beautiful counting set for the kids, to add some color to their math lessons.searching for rocksThis project will be a fun addition to what we use naturally to learn math in our homeschool, which we will be sharing more about next week.Let's get started!

100 Rainbow Rocks ~ Art Project

Supplies Needed:

  1. 100 rocks
  2. white acrylic paint
  3. rainbow colored paints: red, yellow, pink, green, purple, orange (or peach) and blue, we also added black, white, and teal.
  4. mod podge
  5. paintbrushes + water containers
  6. damp rag
  7. wax paper or parchment paper (we started with newspaper, but it isn't the best)

Method for painting your 100 Rainbow Rocks for your classroom:

Painting Rainbow RocksWash your rocks, so they are clean and dust free, then apply 2-3 coats of white paint to all of your rocks, and let dry.100 Rainbow Rocks for Counting Paint each set of 10 rocks, a different color, and let dry. 2-3 coats.100 Rainbow Rocks for Counting Paint 2-3 coats of mod podge to seal and protect each rock, and let dry completely. This can take 3-4 days for your rocks to stop being a little tacky to the touch, and each other, depending on your climate and humidity in your home. More coats of mod podge, the better as you will be storing your rocks together in either a bin, bowl, or basket when not in use.100 Rainbow Rocks for Counting Then, set up for your kids to count, play with, sort, and create for endless hours of fun! We included our favorite large 100 chart printable from TpT, a colorful abacus, and our favorite rainbow themed books.
